    .article of interest. {stettler photographer}

    Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Today’s blog post has nothing to do with photography but everything to do with my family and since this is my blog and I can do whatever I want, I’m posting it! ha ha

I found an article that I like in Today’s Parent Magazine and thought I’d pass it on to help others see a bit of what it’s like to be in the shoes of a parent of a child with a chronic illness…

The article can be found here and if you’d like to read our personal journey to diagnosis, it’s here.

    How Words Can Wound
What I’ve learned as the parent of a child with a chronic illness
    John Hoffman

When your child has a chronic health condition, you have lots to do: mostly look after your kid and learn as much as you can about their illness or disability so you can do it well. But there’s another thing you have to do — talk to people about it. That can take up surprising amounts of emotional energy. Not only do you have to provide basic information, you have to correct misconceptions, endure well-intentioned but ignorant advice or suffer judgmental comments.

    Type 1 vs. Type 2

Our son has type 1 diabetes (a.k.a. juvenile diabetes), a disease that is subject to huge misconceptions. One is that people don’t understand the difference between type 1 and type 2, which leads to all manner of misunderstanding. Another is that diabetic kids can’t eat sugar (or that they got it from eating too much sugar).

Type 2 is the kind that generally comes later in life and is linked to lifestyle — excessive weight, poor diet, lack of exercise. Type 1 comes out of nowhere. The cause is unknown, it’s not preventable and it’s not caused by poor lifestyle.

    Harsh Words

Most media stories refer to the “epidemic of diabetes” without distinguishing between type 1 and type 2. So people think they are more or less the same, and parents of kids with type 1 diabetes are destined to endure ignorant comments. The worst I ever heard came from an Internet diabetes forum: A woman was in a store with her two-year-old diabetic son and realized he had very low blood sugar and needed food fast. She went to the dairy case, grabbed a milk and gave him some as she made her way to the cashier. At this point, a passerby said, ‘You should pay for that before giving it to him.” The mother patiently explained that her son was diabetic and needed the milk now. The passerby replied, “Isn’t he awfully young to have eaten enough junk food to get that already? What did you feed him when he was a baby?”

I hope that few parents have to endure this level of callousness. We never have, although I was once asked how my son could have diabetes when he wasn’t fat. And someone else told her child (within our son’s earshot) that he shouldn’t eat too much sugar so he won’t get diabetes too. My son could handle that. He’s a smart and confident teenager. But how would a seven-year-old have felt?

Parents of kids with type 1 diabetes are by no means the only ones who have to navigate the slings and arrows of people’s insensitivity or ignorance. Parents of kids who take medication for ADHD or other mental health problems get accused of drugging their kids. Parents whose kids have serious food allergies get asked, “Surely she can have a little bit of chocolate?” Parents of children with developmental issues must endure stares of curiosity or even disapproval if their child is making noise or crying loudly in public.

    The Take-home Message

The take-home message is this: When talking to a parent of a child with a chronic condition, stop and think before you speak. And park your assumptions — many of them are likely wrong. (I misunderstood the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes as badly as anyone.)

It’s OK to be curious. We appreciate people’s concerned interest (just not their ill-informed advice). Ask questions, try to understand. Please don’t say scary things in front of the kids and, whatever you do, don’t judge. There may be a lot more going on than you realize.

After a busy couple weeks of doctors appointments all over the province, near death colds (ok, I may slightly overreact) and trying to reclaim the mess that was once my neat and tidy home, I am now back at ‘er with full force!

First, keep in mind that there is still another week and a bit to enter the .Name My Baby. contest for a chance to win a $50 Zimmermann Photography Gift Certificate.

Second, here is a quick shot of a possible future Olympian, in honour of our country’s awesome job so far at Vancouver 2010!

Last but absolutely not least, here are the sneak peeks little Miss Leighton’s mommy has been waiting so patiently for! I love this little peach and any of you who know me, will know that I just fall completely head over heals for the chubby babes!

My latest contest is getting more publicity than I ever could have imagined! I’ve been contacted about it by both the Red Deer Advocate and Stettler’s local radio station, Q14! Just to clarify:

    - The contest is for FUN! I get to give away a $50 Gift Certificate for Zimmermann Photography, promote the blog and have an extended list of baby name ideas!

    - The ‘guidelines’ are just to help us weed out the names we already know we don’t like. They aren’t “Rules” persay.

    - The winner will be chosen by RANDOM draw on March 1. The contest is not a guarantee that we will give our child the winner’s name suggestion.

Check out the original contest post here: http://zimsphoto.com/blog/?p=483

On another note, I felt like posting another sneak peek of my gorgeous cousin’s acting headshots

I’m busy plugging away at editing session after session after session but thought I would take a mini break and post another sneak peek. This session was for my beautiful cousin for her acting headshots and I just couldn’t wait to take a gander at a few of them. Check out her older sister’s session on my very first blog post – .where all the pretty genes go.

Keep posted for a sneak peek of a sweet chubby 8 month old valentine and probably a couple more from this awesome session over the next couple of days!

We’ve finally gotten our first three dimensional look at our latest little peanut yesterday and although I thought it would help in my search for the perfect name, ‘President’s Choice’ is looking more and more appealing.

So I’m looking for some help — I want your name ideas! Comment on this post with your brilliant baby boy names and,  on March 1, I’ll do a random draw for a $50 Zimmermann Photography Gift Certificate!

    Some information:

    - of course our last name is Zimmermann, so the name will have to work with that — ie.) not a name ending in ‘x’ or ‘z’ and personally, I’d prefer not ending in an ‘n’
    - we’d like a name that goes well with his brother’s name — Carter
    - our favourite names start with a C, K, R or D and end with an ‘R’
    - winning the random draw does not mean we will necessarily choose your name for our child
    - yes, your own name is unique and fantastic but we are looking for a name that our child can call all his own ;)

I love this family! I had the pleasure of photographing big sister right around her first birthday last spring and when I saw her today, I couldn’t believe how big she’d gotten since then! She was definitely excited to show me her new baby brother, Owen and I’m super excited to show all of you some (okay — lots of) shots from today’s session with him!

I had the best assistant ever today — and she even brought along her own camera!

Super long weekend, even longer day but I managed to finish the edits on sweet baby Benson. Tomorrow will be gallery day after my a.m. newborn session but until then, here’s a couple more sneak peeks for mommy and ‘auntie’.

I’ll also go announce a winner for the free children’s session by tomorrow evening so stay tuned!
